Set in the year 2102, twelve years after the events of the first Front Mission, the story takes place in Alordesh, a member state of the Oceania Cooperative Union simmering with anti-OCU resentment. When the Alordeshi military stages a sudden coup and declares independence, its forces overrun the local OCU garrisons and plunge the country into chaos. The tale follows three individuals caught in the uprising, corporal Ash Faruk, captain Thomas Norland, and intelligence officer Lisa Stanley, whose separate struggles to survive, rescue prisoners, and fight back gradually intertwine as they uncover the hidden powers backing the coup and pilot the mechanized war machines known as wanzers.
